Cissy

Sale price£24.00

An early eating apple with a fine aromatic flavour.

Green base with a red flush, and a firm, fine-grained, green tinged flesh. Ready to harvest in early autumn, will store to mid-autumn. It is a tip bearing tree, that is well suited to the Monmouthshire area but can be a bit susceptible to scab in some areas.

According to Basham (1899) it was originally raised by Mr Tampling of Malpas, Monmouthshire in the 1790’s. It went on to become a real favourite in the Monmouthshire markets. After his death his sister Cissy continued to distribute the grafts, hence its current name. When it was sent for exhibition in Abergavenny at the National Apple Congress of 1883 the decision was made to rename it as Monmouthshire Beauty, this was not to last as the reaction locally was emphatically unfavourable.

What will my trees be like when they arrive?

Our trees are supplied as bare root trees in the dormant season (usually December - March).

  • 1 year old "maiden" trees will usually arrive as a single, flexible stem (or some varieties will also have some side-shoots). Our 1 year-old trees are at least 90cm tall and can be up to 150cm (3ft - 5ft).
  • Our older trees are 2 or 3 years old, usually have some branching and may have some fruit buds. They are between generally 110cm and 150cm (4ft - 5ft).

Trees that have grown over 150cm will be pruned to a bud at the top to fit into the packaging.

Thanks for my order of 3 x 1 Yr old apple trees. Very well wrapped, they arrived looking fresh and healthy with good root sytems. They are in their growing positions in my orchard and I will enjoy watching their growth over the years. All are varieties very local to me, v special.

Lovely to hear - thanks Maggie
