What exactly is a Welsh pear or apple tree?

Fruit from a Welsh apple treeWhat exactly is a Welsh heritage apple or pear? One with long historical provenance to the region? One grown in an apple or pear tree nursery and harvested by the people of Wales? Or just any that are found to be growing here regardless of origin?

Well, not too long ago now, a group of apple enthusiasts, including Tyn y Berllan and led by the Welsh Perry & Cider Society and the National Botanic Garden of Wales, developed a National Register of Welsh Apple Varieties (also known as a “Welsh Pomona”). 

It’s the first official record of the Welsh apple varieties (known so far). They identified 64 varieties (29 make the official list and 35 are under review). 

We suspect there are many more to come...
