Pen Caled

Sale price£24.00

A Welsh mid-season cooking and cider apple.

Round green fruit with a red flush and some russet and firm flesh. A good blender with no tannins.

Starts to flower mid April and drops around October.

Translates as 'hard head' possibly referring to the firmness of the fruit. Found in St. Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire, originally planted by the Trion monks at the abbey for the purposes of cider making.

Permission to use photograph by Philip James (Dinefwr Heritage Orchard) is gratefully acknowledged.

What will my trees be like when they arrive?

Our trees are supplied as bare root trees in the dormant season (usually December - March).

  • 1 year old "maiden" trees will usually arrive as a single, flexible stem (or some varieties will also have some side-shoots). Our 1 year-old trees are at least 90cm tall and can be up to 150cm (3ft - 5ft).
  • Our older trees are 2 or 3 years old, usually have some branching and may have some fruit buds. They are between generally 110cm and 150cm (4ft - 5ft).

Trees that have grown over 150cm will be pruned to a bud at the top to fit into the packaging.

Very good service

A healthy-looking specimen; the best of a handful I ordered from different retailers to test the market. Arrived swiftly, well packaged and with instructions too—handy for a beginner like me. Fingers crossed it'll like its new home. I've ordered a couple of different ones to test what varieties do best here...
