Morgan Sweet
A multipurpose apple that can be used for eating, cooking and cider.
Famed in South Wales (hence included in the Welsh Pomona).
Large round pale greenish-yellow in colour, sweet and fruity.
Ready in August but won't store beyond November.
A popular childhood favourite for many who grew up in North Somerset where it was once widely planted. Much travelled to South Wales to be distributed by Morgan of Cardiff. Also popular with miners in South Wales on their annual holidays to Barry and Porthcawl in August.
Somerset farmers would come over the channel with boatloads of the early Morgan Sweet, soft enough for the miners with poor teeth and gums.
Makes a pure, sweet and strong fruity cider. Rapidly ferments, ready to be drunk by Christmas.
Triploid.
Permission to use photograph by Philip James (Dinefwr Heritage Orchard) is gratefully acknowledged.
