Gabalfa
A late Welsh eater and cooking apple for the new year. Rare.
Large yellow green with a dark flush, a delicious sweet lovely bite of an apple.
Excellent keeper. A strong growing tree and a good bearer.
Raised by the Head Gardener to the Third Marquis of Bute, Cardiff's coal magnate. He described the fruit as being 'as large as those of Blenheim Orange. They were similarly coloured with dark red upon one side, yellow on the other... and was distinct from any'. Once thought to have disappeared. Believed to have been grown on the current site of the New Theatre, Cardiff.
Has a special place in Nicky's heart as she spent her early childhood in Gabalfa (Cardiff) and after a few year's searching was delighted to have been kindly sent some graftwood from Andrew Large from his beautiful orchard at Talybont-on-Usk.
