Foxwhelp
A mild bittersharp cider apple.
Medium to large yellow fruit, flushed crimson in the sun. Flesh yellow, sometimes tinted red. Pleasant, clean flavour.
Ripens in October.
First mentioned by Evelyn in his 1664 Pomona along with Redstreak as being held in the highest esteem. Evelyn suggests it was originally a Gloucestershire apple that spread to Herefordshire. Hogg records that by 1727 it eclipsed Redstreak as the most highly esteemed with the cider made from it being equal to French wine.
Makes a very dry, sharp cider with a characteristic flavour.
Permission to use photograph by Kevin Garrod (Monnow Valley Cider) is gratefully acknowledged.
